Mary Valley Rattler
Environmental Sustainability Statement
At the Mary Valley Rattler, we honour our heritage while embracing a future built on environmental, social, and cultural sustainability. Our Environmental Management approach is guided by practices that protect the natural landscape, support community wellbeing, and preserve the rich cultural history of our region.
Environmental Sustainability
Sustainable Infrastructure: All timber sleepers are sustainably sourced, and end-of-life sleepers are repurposed as fuel for steam locomotives – reducing waste and honouring tradition.
Cleaner Operations: We use high-quality, low-emission coal, balancing operational heritage with lower environmental impact.
Solar Energy: Amamoor Station is powered by solar, reducing grid reliance and carbon emissions.
Vegetation & Habitat Protection: Regular vegetation management uses where possible low-impact techniques to preserve flora and fauna along the corridor.
Waste Reduction: Recycling and waste bins are provided at all stations and within each carriage, supporting responsible disposal and reduced litter.
Social Sustainability
Volunteering for Good: We are proud to be a community hub supported by over 100 passionate volunteers who drive the guest experience and actively participate in local initiatives.
Containers for Change: Our volunteer-led recycling program diverts waste and funds volunteer social events and wellbeing initiatives.
Inclusive Pathways: The Rattler offers training, mentoring, and pathways for people of all ages and abilities, fostering connection, confidence, and a sense of purpose.
Cultural Sustainability
Heritage Preservation: We safeguard local stories through interpretation, storytelling, and education, preserving cultural identity for future generations.
Support a Sleeper Program: This 100% online, tax-deductible giving program enables individuals to leave a legacy by supporting sustainably sourced track infrastructure.
Community Partnerships: We collaborate with local groups, including Rotary and historical societies, to support 22+ community organisations through shared fundraising events.
Local First: We prioritise local producers, artisans, and suppliers in everything from catering to merchandise – supporting the regional economy and celebrating local culture.
